Short history of ECHO Meals on Wheels.
The ECHO in our name stands for Ecumenical Community Helping Others. ECHO Meals on wheels originally started with local churches coming together to fulfil a need in the community. This year we celebrate 50 years of providing this service!
Meals were originally prepared out of people’s homes. In 1974 we moved to the Fairmount Community Church, and in 2004 to where we are now, the kitchen in the town hall. We are a Not-for-profit organization. We do not receive government funding. We strive to keep the costs to our clients as low as possible and fill in the gaps of our budget with grants from various organizations and contributions from the general public which include donations made in memory of a client or volunteer. We have just a few fundraisers, including the sale of the Syracuse Save around books, and our annual pancake breakfast and new this year, a Bunco fundraiser.
Our territory includes Fairmount, Geddes, Camillus, Lakeland, Onondaga Hill, Solvay, Marcellus and Warner’s. We serve the chronically ill and those temporarily indisposed due to accident, illness or surgery, or those that may require our services for any other reason. There is no age requirement, although the majority of our clients are seniors. There are no income requirements or other needs base testing done to qualify for our program. Our purpose is to deliver well-balanced and nutritious meals to those I need.
We deliver 5 days a week, with the exception of a few holidays.
